CULTURE NEWS

  • New Mexico Actors Lab presents Paula Vogel’s play How I Learned to Drive—this two‑hour memory play blends dark comedy with a sensitive look at grooming, consent, and power imbalances. The production opened yesterday and will continue with 7:30 p.m. shows on Saturday plus a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday at 3205 Calle Marie with tickets ranging from $5 to $40.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Historian Estevan Rael Galvez will unveil his Native Bound Unbound project on two events—one free session at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque on Nov 1 and a sold-out presentation at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe on Nov 2—to explore Indigenous slavery through documents, artifacts and stories. In other culture picks, DeVotchKa performed at Meow Wolf on Oct 30, today a free Nightmare on Rufina Street event is held at Second Street Brewery, and the Human Rights Alliance will host its Time Warp Ball fundraiser at Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery on Nov 1.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Casa Chimayo on Water Street now has new owners Benina and chef Joaquin Quintana who have updated the menu to blend traditional New Mexican dishes with flavors from his Diné heritage. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday north of Albuquerque, Indigenous education experts said the state’s 70-page draft plan lacks details for Native language classes and clear funding or goals, leaving tribal leaders and educators frustrated.   • Santa Fe High School ended a lockdown from Wednesday after an alleged weapon sighting and will resume normal classes Thursday morning—police found no immediate threat during the campus sweep while the investigation continues.  KOB 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico will begin emergency food aid with $30 million on Nov. 1 for roughly 460,000 residents who will lose their SNAP benefits due to a federal shutdown, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said on Wednesday. The state funds will be distributed through existing Electronic Benefit Transfer cards and cover about the first 10 days of November—providing roughly 30% of normal benefits, with elderly and disabled recipients receiving at least $100.  Santa Fe Reporter
