CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Fe International Film Festival is underway and features over 200 films that may be considered for the Academy Awards—this event also includes submissions for Best International Feature Film. Actor Edward James Olmos will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award Saturday as the festival runs until Tuesday, Oct. 21.  KOB 4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Juan Blea, a self-employed software development consultant and SFPS Diversity Council member, is running for a seat on Public Schools District 5 School Board. He aims to invest in classrooms rather than bureaucracy and support teachers by focusing on Santa Fe's community well-being (emphasizing data-informed and community-centered decision making).  Santa Fe Reporter
  • SFPS released new proficiency data showing that reading scores improved while science scores fell. District officials said they will launch new programs to support growth in future assessments.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Jakob (Jack) Lain, a retired teacher and principal with 20 years of experience, is running for District 5 School Board to help address staffing shortages and budget cuts in the schools. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Food assistance through SNAP remains safe through October but may be cut in November if the government shutdown continues, potentially affecting nearly 40 million people. State officials said New Mexico, where over 1 in 5 residents rely on benefits (costing about $90 million a month), could see local families and the economy harmed if the shutdown persists.  KOB 4

  • Santa Fe County and a developer unveiled details for Nueva Acequia Apartments, a 159-unit affordable housing project on the city's south side.
