CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Mexico Tourism Department is deploying a hot air balloon at this year’s Balloon Fiesta to mark the upcoming Route 66 centennial with a mass ascension on October 4 and limited edition pins distributed on the ground—Rainbow Ryders will operate the 90,000 cubic foot balloon at nine events including this Fiesta and in 2026.  KOB 4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New Mexico Environment Department approved a wastewater permit for Bishop’s Lodge that lets the resort discharge 30,000 gallons per day from a new low-dose disposal field built with an upgraded treatment plant, following nearly a year of reviews and a Sept. 8 recommendation - residents in Tesuque Village continue to protest the plan, saying it could harm drinking wells downstream.  Santa Fe Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Fe County announced winners of its 2025 'I Voted' sticker design contest after nearly 400 community votes selected three designs from 57 entries. The winning designs—Roadrunner & Yucca by Jayden Moya, Adobe Skyline by McKenzie Gallegos, and Bold Roadrunner by Io Amswych—will be printed and distributed on stickers during upcoming elections.  KOB 4
  • Construction on the Aamodt water settlement continues on NM 502 — local officials say they are questioning if federal funding will be enough to complete the project.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • State transportation officials are asking for public input on replacing the El Rito Bridge on Highway 554 near Carson National Forest as the current structure is in poor condition — they will review the proposed design and traffic impacts and answer questions at a meeting scheduled Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at El Rito Public Library.  KOB 4
  • New Mexico schools will receive electric buses under a two-year pilot program supported by the state with an initial $5M investment—Las Vegas City Schools, West Las Vegas Schools and Monte del Sol Charter School are among the participants. GreenPower will deliver three Type A buses in the first year and later add two Type D and one Mega BEAST bus with each six‑week pilot round, and an additional $15M may follow if the program succeeds.  KOB 4
  • Today the Public Works and Utilities Committee postponed the council vote on Mayor Alan Webber's proposal to raise the minimum wage for Santa Fe workers—citing ongoing surveys as the reason for delaying further discussion.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Yesterday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham formally called on lawmakers to meet in a special session today—designed to counter federal cuts that could affect state services.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • On Tuesday, most Santa Fe City Council candidates agreed that housing costs are rising too fast and policy changes are needed. They will propose new ideas in upcoming meetings — a step aimed at controlling the high housing expenses.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions advised federal workers to gather essential employment records, Social Security numbers, and other key documents—this preparation is needed to file for unemployment insurance if a government shutdown causes furloughs or layoffs.  KOB 4
  • Governor Lujan Grisham is urging the Water Quality Control Commission to change a May ruling that stops oilfield wastewater from being used outside oilfields—she says this is needed to secure more safe water under her 50-Year Water Action Plan. State officials and industry groups are now reviewing new treatment methods to make the water safe for industrial use.  Santa Fe Reporter
