CULTURE NEWS

  • Researchers from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science and partner institutions identified a new species of duckbilled dinosaur called Ahshiselsaurus wimani in northwestern New Mexico. The 35-foot long, nine-ton plant eater lived 75 million years ago and was named for the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness in San Juan County, and its study was published on September 29.  Santa Fe Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico officials announced that the state will launch its universal child care program on Nov. 1 to expand access and improve quality after outlining the plan last Friday. The initiative also provides a low-interest revolving loan fund to help providers upgrade and build facilities—an effort designed to meet the growing demand for early learning services.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • A special master will hear settlement details in the Texas v. New Mexico and Colorado suit tied to the Rio Grande Compact this week — the Supreme Court will issue its final decision in early 2026.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • GOP lawmakers in New Mexico formed a task force to study changes to the state's medical malpractice system ahead of a special session — they said the current system favors a small group of injured patients and attorneys.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Candidates for mayor answered questions at a bilingual forum—discussing plans to support the south side, provide city services in Spanish, and promote inclusivity in Santa Fe.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • On September 10, the city approved a resolution that lets the City Attorney’s Office foreclose on properties with outstanding liens—strengthening its ability to tackle nuisance properties.  Santa Fe New Mexican

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials in New Mexico warned that if tax credits are not extended by the end of the year, many who buy health insurance could face steep premium hikes—51,000 New Mexicans may see their costs jump by $578 monthly. Lawmakers will meet in Santa Fe next week to address this issue as senators and the governor press for renewal to protect health coverage.  Santa Fe Reporter
