ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials have detected a potentially harmful algae bloom at Santa Cruz Lake near Española — a popular recreation area at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains — and urge visitors to avoid contact with the water. Santa Fe New Mexican
- ➤ Bishop's Lodge received a wastewater permit approval despite local opposition from Protect Tesuque—residents say the plan to discharge treated effluent near Little Tesuque Creek may risk water quality. - ➤ The New Mexico Environment Department warned Friday that samples from Santa Cruz Lake near Española show a potentially harmful algae bloom, and it advised visitors to avoid untreated water—steps that help reduce health risks from the toxins. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. John Pederson warned that as fall begins, respiratory illnesses will start to increase and may peak from January—April, though most children will do fine without treatment. He advised parents to wash hands, stay home when sick, eat well, exercise, and vaccinate as new tools against RSV become available. KOB 4
- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Health declared the state's measles outbreak over Friday—42 days passed without a new case—after the final case was reported in Santa Fe County on Aug. 14. Over 56,000 people received the MMR vaccine since Feb. 1. KOB 4
