CULTURE NEWS

  • Arthur Sze (a Santa Fe resident since 1972) will be named the 25th U.S. Poet Laureate on Oct. 9 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He will use his new role to honor supporters of poetry and promote translations of his work.  KOB 4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Mexico colleges and universities have faced a $350 million cut in federal grants, which mainly affected Hispanic-serving institutions—state officials tracked the funding decreases to gauge the impact on students and families.  KOB 4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • INTERA presented data from dozens of samples on Thursday, showing 1 in 3 land parcels in La Cieneguilla and La Cienega are contaminated with PFAS — officials will review the findings to decide on future actions.  Santa Fe New Mexican

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CYFD secured federal approval for a plan to fund prevention services after three failed attempts—an outside expert said New Mexico could draw as much as $3 million per year.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • People in New Mexico cities may soon see new opportunities as 18 programs share $1.5 million from the Violence Intervention Program Fund, including Unlock Civics New Mexico which received $100,000 to pay peer educators and offer stipends to students. Executive director Justin Allen said his past struggles with substance abuse and incarceration led him to use the grant to build safer communities—promoting civic engagement among those affected by the criminal justice system.  KOB 4
  • Santa Fe has hired new human services director Salaverry, who worked for Pallet shelter company, and he will be supervised by Community Health and Safety Director Henri Hammond-Paul — who served as interim director before the appointment — as the department transitions its leadership.  Santa Fe New Mexican

HEALTH NEWS

  • Overdose deaths and emergency room visits increased in Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Taos counties as fentanyl was linked to most recent fatalities reported Thursday — according to the New Mexico Department of Health.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • The state Department of Health reported rising overdose deaths and ER visits in three New Mexico counties during the first half of this year. Taos County saw a 340% increase while Santa Fe and Rio Arriba reported increases of 104% and 48% respectively - fentanyl in drug supplies is largely blamed.  KOB 4
