CRIME NEWS

  • Records from the State Ethics Commission show that three men were arrested at probation offices in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and are accused of helping ICE in violation of a new law.  Santa Fe New Mexican

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Fe poet Arthur Sze was named the 25th US Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress on September 15—he will take office on Oct. 9 and plans to publish a translation anthology titled Transient Worlds by April 30.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • The Española Teen Center and Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum are partnering on Beyond the Bike, a program that gives local teens free classes in lowrider bike building and skateboard painting. The exhibit runs through the year—helping youths learn art and design skills from local experts.  Santa Fe Reporter

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The State Land Office held its second-best oil and gas auction this month when a tract in Eddy County sold for $175,000 per acre — breaking its previous record of $132,552 per acre.  Santa Fe New Mexican

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory has vented the first container holding tritium waste— it will be moved for treatment and then to an off-site disposal area.  Santa Fe New Mexican

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leaders of the Zuni Pueblo endorsed Deb Haaland’s bid for governor on Sept. 16th, saying she is the only candidate who will give tribes a consistent voice. Her campaign joins the backing of other pueblos—Jamez, Santo Domingo and Picuris—even as some tribes support a different candidate.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Santa Fe’s First Judicial District Court announced a new mental health diversion program to help people with severe mental illness avoid jail—by screening those booked on misdemeanor charges and offering voluntary treatment and support services. Officials said the program, which does not cover DWI or nonviolent felony cases, will drop charges when participants complete a recovery plan.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Santa Fe has named Henri Hammond-Paul its new Human Services director (he worked for Pallet shelter company and served as interim director before Salaverry took over), making him Salaverry’s direct supervisor.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • New Mexico’s caregiver program is now available statewide and is accepting applicants from Bernalillo and Doña Ana counties to provide financial aid and training for family and friend caregivers of older adults and people with disabilities. The program began in October and has helped 285 participants with over $1.2 million in aid—support that will continue as more people apply.  KOB 4
