  • Officials removed 12 trees at Fort Marcy Park for Zozobra insurance requirements, sparking protests on Aug. 21 where city staff outlined a $200,000 plan to replant up to 36 trees as part of a $5 million beautification project—local advocate Billie Blair urged that funds be used to boost tree equity in other neighborhoods. The plan will lead to further public meetings as the design process progresses.  Santa Fe Reporter

  • Doodlet’s Toy Store and Gift Shop turned 70 this year and was sold on New Year's Eve to local family co-owners Monica Solano-Scarborough—along with her daughters Savannah and Hailee—who plan to add local touches like a 10% discount for residents while honoring the shop’s long history and community support.  Santa Fe Reporter

CULTURE NEWS

  • Composer Ross Hamlin will lead a super-band to debut his original score at the Burning of Zozobra this Friday at Fort Marcy—he recruited local musicians to play keys, drums, cello, violin and trumpet to match the event’s mood.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Cinema Artistic Programmer Cole Forrest took over the Center for Contemporary Arts theater in February and now supports local film and visual arts with screenings of indigenous, queer, and foreign films.   • Local business owners hurt by slow Guadalupe Street construction have organized the 'In Guad We Trust' fundraiser Sunday from noon—8 p.m. at 740 Cerrillos Rd to help struggling shops while Santa Fe hosts a queer dance party today at The Mystic, a Magic: the Gathering event Friday at 5 p.m. at 1966 Cerrillos Rd C, and a small art show opening Tuesday at Art Mozaik Fine Art.  Santa Fe Reporter
