CRIME NEWS

  • Investigators said a recent fire at Santa Fe Suites was started on purpose—surveillance footage and a fire report showed that the blaze was deliberately ignited.  Santa Fe New Mexican

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ryan T. Cook, a local comic creator, discussed his new strip—Pacheco Prairie Dog’s Southwest Almanac—which appears on Sundays in the Santa Fe New Mexican and blends local history with seasonal life. He detailed his creative process and stressed that crafted comics offer a real art experience in today's digital age.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Frazier Shows is preparing a new carnival for Rodeo de Santa Fe that will include rides + games for visitors. The carnival is expected to add extra excitement as the event draws near.  Santa Fe New Mexican

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New high school graduation requirements will take effect for incoming freshmen in New Mexico this year and set a 24-credit minimum with four years of English, math, three years of science, and four years of social studies—removing the Algebra II requirement while introducing electives like financial literacy. Local districts, including Santa Fe, have developed additional credit options based on community feedback.  KOB 4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Middle Mesa Fire burned 2,500 acres with no containment in Rio Arriba County and Archuleta County as crews used rotor and fixed wing support on Monday to slow its spread. Command was transferred to the Southwest Complex Incident Management Team Tuesday evening—fire managers warned that drier days may bring increased smoke.  KOB 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will remove twelve elm trees from Fort Marcy Park because Zozobra organizers said the trees cause poor sight lines and safety issues—residents objected to the plan.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • The behavioral health committee finalized plans for planning grants that will support regional mental health reforms mandated by legislation passed this year—officials say the grants will help coordinate efforts across regions.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • About 31,000 New Mexico taxpayers may soon receive a letter if they missed claiming child tax credits in 2023 and 2024—eligible parents earning less than $350,000, with families making $25,000 or less potentially receiving up to $600 per child, are encouraged to file or amend returns for free. Unclaimed credits total $14.3 million and the Taxation and Revenue Department is reaching out to help those who qualify.  KOB 4
