ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Wednesday update said the Laguna Fire burned 15,714 acres and was 40% contained in the Santa Fe National Forest. Lightning started the wildfire near Gallina on June 25—bringing in 291 firefighters and multiple aircraft—while officials said warmer, drier weather increased risk for communities along Rio Gallina and Rio Chama.  KOB 4

  • The state Supreme Court ruled that the statute of limitations had expired — this decision sets aside former tax secretary Demesia Padilla’s embezzlement conviction.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Bishop's Lodge resort has asked a court to limit protests by establishing a safety buffer on Bishops Lodge Road from Pedregal Place to Senda Vieja — Protect Tesuque has criticized the measure as unfair.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • On July 16th, New Mexico marked the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test by installing a roadside sign at the Trinity Site to honor those harmed by the blast. Affected families will receive congressional compensation until 2028—reflecting both the state’s recognition of past loss and its commitment to support the community.  KOB 4
