COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The second-ever Santa Fe Disability Pride Parade will raise awareness about disability rights — advocates say positivity and courage are needed after Medicaid cuts.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Women’s Connection, formerly The Transition Network, rebranded to boost connections for local women 50 and over and continues offering public programs; chair Bev McLean, who joined after moving from the Bay Area in 2022, said the group will host former Denver immigration attorney Dan Kowalski on Monday, July 28—an event held at Montezuma Lodge with a $10 donation for non-members. This move follows a survey that confirmed members’ strong desire for more engaging events.  Santa Fe Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • The State Supreme Court invalidated the first-degree murder conviction of Santa Fe resident Robert Romero from 2018—concluding that his unenclosed porch did not qualify as a structure under burglary law.  Santa Fe New Mexican

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eighty years after Los Alamos detonated the world’s first atomic bomb in the Trinity Test, New Mexico still shows lasting changes from the Manhattan Project. Historians note that the event continues to shape the state in many ways.  Santa Fe New Mexican

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Daniel Denipah of Santa Clara said beavers help store water and keep the land cool by building dams in a stream system that has been affected by drought and past wildfires. Some acequia farmers worry that the dams in traditional irrigation ditches may limit water use, and Denipah hopes the groups will soon work together to share the water.  Santa Fe Reporter
  • Officials are pursuing a full suppression strategy on Laguna Fire that burned 15K acres and is 40% contained in Santa Fe National Forest. The fire ignited on June 25 and firefighters are working to stop its spread—efforts to secure nearby property continue.  Santa Fe New Mexican

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Luján urged federal agencies to quickly set guidelines for the expanded Radiation Exposure Compensation Act that will give $100,000 to New Mexico radiation victims, including Trinity Test survivors and post-1971 uranium workers. However, proposed Medicaid cuts may limit needed health care as nearly 40% of New Mexicans depend on Medicaid — a change that could lead rural hospitals to face revenue losses.  Santa Fe Reporter
