CRIME NEWS

  • Stacy Walker, 50, remains in Santa Fe County jail on kidnapping charges and other counts following Tuesday’s chase—when a pair were rescued from a U-Haul after the driver allegedly trapped them inside while cleaning the truck.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • State police charged a Santa Fe officer—one of two National Guard sergeants accused of stealing military night-vision goggles from a Las Cruces facility—with theft charges.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • A family of the teen killed in the 2022 Española shootout criticized the two-year juvenile center sentence given to Daniel Martinez during a hearing, where District Judge T. Glenn Ellington said Martinez will remain in custody until he turns 21 (the maximum allowed under state law).  Santa Fe New Mexican

CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Mexico Film Office announced its annual Film and Media Conference will be held on May 31 in Albuquerque with panel discussions, vendor presentations and networking to support filmmakers and industry professionals—promising new opportunities for local film production. The Santa Fe International Film Festival will host its Black and White Ball gala in July to benefit emerging filmmakers and expand to a six-day event from Oct. 15 to Oct. 20—Billy Luther’s film Frybread Face and Me will be screened with a Q&A on April 18 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.  Santa Fe Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Fe City Council set aside $60,000 last spring in its 2025 budget for a study on adding personal staff—officials will decide if extra support can help council members with their duties. Further details on the study have not yet been announced.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • State lawmakers ended the recent session without passing a bill on juvenile crime as they sent a public safety package to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The governor said she is meeting with legislative leaders to consider a special session—while lawmakers plan to work on juvenile justice reform next year.  KOB 4
  • Governor signed a bill that expands the list of offenses considered racketeering — the measure is one of several laws aimed at strengthening New Mexico’s legal framework against organized crime.  Santa Fe New Mexican
  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham sent the National Guard to help law enforcement in Albuquerque stop crime—an action few have seen in the state's past. Past uses of the Guard in New Mexico included a courthouse raid in 1967, a student protest in 1970, a prison riot in 1980, and wildfire flood protection in 2022.  KOB 4
