Española Humane is planning to build a new 7,010-square-foot clinic to serve an underserved community and respond to rising stray animals.

The facility is expected to cost $9 million — it will increase the shelter’s surgical capacity by 30%.

City officials reported that Santa Fe received $18.3 million in capital outlay funds while county leaders said Santa Fe County received $6.4 million from the state during the 2025 session.

Santa Fe County jail said it has not received any tort claims or paid any settlements for injuries caused by less-lethal munitions during the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to a spokesperson.

New Mexico paid over $1 million to settle claims after a 75-year-old inmate lost his leg when a guard shot him with a bean bag round during an argument.

Officials said the settlement comes as they review the use of less-lethal munitions in state prisons.
